２．なぜジョージ４世以降の銅貨の銘はBRITANNIAではなくBRITANNIARと最後にRがつくのか（回答編１）

前回、英国の一部の銅貨で使われている「ブリタニア」のスペルについて、英国の博物館に照会したことを紹介しました。

すると、早速、ビクトリア＆アルバート博物館のメタルワーク部門の方から回答をいただいたので紹介したいと思います。

１．BRITANNIARが使われ始めた時期について

添付されていた資料によると、BRITANNIARは、ジョージ４世の銅貨から使われるようになったようです。

その前のジョージ３世までは、BRITTANIAが使われていました。

ここで、題名の微妙な変化に気づかれた方もいるかと思います。

照会編では「なぜウィリアム４世以降・・・」だったのが、この回答編１では「なぜジョージ４世以降・・・」に変わっています。

これは私のコレクションがまだ小さく、ジョージ４世の銅貨がなかったことに起因しています。

博物館の方に教えてもらえて良かったです。

２．BRITANNIAとBRITANNIARの違いについて

まずはBRITANNIAから。

これはラテン語の単語で、英語のBritainのこと。

つまり、英国を擬人化した象徴であるブリタニア女神ではなく、国名のブリテンを表していました。

次に、BRITANNIAR。

（ラテン語の文法用語が出てくるので心して下さい）

これはラテン語で、BRITANNIAの複数形の所有格の略語である（！）とのこと。

複数形の所有格は、BRITANNIARUM。

その略語が、BRITANNIARとのことです。

よく見ると略を表すであろうコロン（：）がついていて、BRITANNIAR：となっています。

英語にすると、of the British territories。

また、BRITANNIAR：の後には、王を表すREX、または女王を表すREGが続いています。

つまり、BRITANNIAR： REXは、king of the British territories。

そして、BRITANNIAR： REGは、queen of the British territoriesとなります。

Many thanks for your enquiry. The 'R' to which you refer can appar at the end of coins minted under Victoria's predecessors, as well. See for example the first entry on the Royal Mint Museum blog here:

'BRITANNIAR' is an abbreviation of the Latin possessive plural form of the word 'Britannia', which would be 'BRITANNIARUM'.

It means 'of the British territories'.

３．更なる疑問

ここで更なる疑問が出てきます。

（１）British territories（英国領土）とは具体的にどこを指すのでしょうか？

（２）ジョージ３世時代でも海外に植民地を所有していたにもかかわらず、なぜジョージ４世の時代から複数を表すBRITANNIARが使われ始めたのでしょうか？

ということで、以下の通り再照会メールを送ってみました。

According to the second attachment, 'Britannia' was used until the George III reign and 'Britanniar' (Rex or Reg) started to be used from the George IV time.

1. Why did they start to use 'British territories' instead of 'Britain' from the George IV reign even though Britain had already possessed a lot of territories (colonies) abroad before George IV?

2. When 'Britanniar' was used for 'of the British territories, which territories did they specifically mean?
